Matt Cassel to the KC Chiefs
Are you kidding me? A second round pick is all the Patriots got for trading Matt Cassel, a guy who won 11 games in 2008, to the Kansas City Chiefs? Okay yeah we get it, Scott Pioli was hired by the chiefs so he’s a friend and all, but what the hell? I think they could have done a little better than the #34 pick.
I’m pretty sure a team like Detroit, Tampa Bay, or San Francisco would have given up first round picks for this guy, who has more than proved himself as a starter in the NFL. From what I understand, even the Broncos were entertaining the idea of a new quarterback. A three-team trade involving Tampa Bay, Denver, & NE sprang up just before Cassel was traded to the Chiefs. Supposedly the Bucs wanted to trade for Cassel and give him to the Broncos for Jay Cutler. Would this have been a better option for the Patriots? I think so. Tampa Bay probably would have coughed up a first round pick, knowing full well they’d be making out well in the deal, getting Jay Cutler who has proven he can sling the ball, or even in the worst case getting Matt Cassel (should the Broncos have rejected this trade) who could help them win games.
But let’s get back to the question at hand here. Could the Patriots have done better than a 2nd round pick for Matt Cassel. Hell yes.
